The long history of Bernard Chevrolet
begins in 1914,
when John Bernard opened Bernard Chevrolet in downtown Libertyville at 611 North Milwaukee
Ave. At that time Bernard Chevrolet offered a full service automotive dealership with an
indoor showroom. For the next 45 years business was strong and it became necessary to move
the operation south of downtown to 135 North Milwaukee Ave. By the late 60's John turned
over the reigns to his son Ray Bernard. Business was booming and Ray purchased a third
location to build his "state of the art" facility.
Ray and his dad John had both been camping
enthusiasts so it was a natural progression for Ray to offer
recreational vehicles at his new facility. Ray offered
several different types and brands of new and used RV's until he settled on a franchise
offered by Winnebago. Ray traveled on many Winnebago Caravans and headed up several
Midwest rallies.
A complete and separate RV service facility was added
in early 1973 to accommodate the new found business. By
1974 Bernard had purchased one of the first GMC motorhomes and
became one of the largest GMC dealerships in the nation. In 1981 Ray Bernard decided to
hand over the dealership to his son Craig Bernard. Craig has overseen continued growth of
his dealership, becoming a Top 20 Winnebago franchise, a Top 10 National Gulfstream and a
successful Carriage dealership. In October of 1999 Bernard's became a Workhorse warranty
and service center.
